18+ section

ive noticed on other forums they have 18+ sections where members that are registerd at over 18 can access this section, This section would be for these certain people, like on the beutiful women thread you cant show boobs, well mabey in this section you can. Im only 14 so i would'nt be able to access the forum, but for other members they can, because if they see boobs or something adult, there not going to be like, cool im gonna tell all my friends. they would act much more mature about it than us "minor" members.

thoughts, opinions, etc?

I think it's a good idea. I have met a lot of mature teenagers, especially on this forum, unfortunately the law does not make the distinction. Some threads like the RDR Member picture thread does make me uncomfortable due to the young age of some of the members posting. One member suggested posting a risque picture of herself along with another underage member (probably a joke?) and another posted a pic of Jessica Alba with a see through top. I would prefer to err on the side of caution when it comes to "To Catch a Predator" style internet exchanges. Besides, I like saying whatever the hell I want (within reason) and an 18+ area would facilitate that.

Well see everyone automaticly thinks porn, im not talking about porn, there would still be some rules, like they can't be fully nude, only boobs can be shown, if ladys are posting stuff mabey about men, then keep it to them being shirtless or something, it doesnt need to be about porn.

Um no? If horny kids want to fake their registration age and see naked women on an RDR forum, I suggest google.

There is really no need, as it is against the forum rules anyway. I suspect most members over the age of eighteen wouldn't care too much for it either.

Besides, we have no way of verifying someone's age, so that's a no.

This is what pretty much makes the whole idea pointless.
Extremely easy to lie about your age, so an 18+ area of the forum wouldn't really be a good idea.

Well, adult-only sites get away with it. I would just be an advocate simply for the legality and conversation aspect.

Anything that would be considered for the 18+ forum is basically against the forum rules.

And we are in no way liable for anything that happens as a result from viewing or posting on the forums. If you really want to discuss that stuff, I'm sure there are a ton of forums that would happy to have you.

That is not how we run things at RDN.

Seems like you are overreacting to the mere suggestion that something could be better here. No need to be so sensitive about it. Someone suggested an idea which I advocated. This forum does seem to be ban-happy, which suggests to me that either the rules are too kid-friendly or the mods are on a power-trip. I haven't seen much of the latter until your eloquent post, Claydon. I am not in any way suggesting a porn room, simply a room where adults can converse freely about whatever.

And legality as in, there seems to be a lot of flirting and suggestive language going on in certain threads. How much of that is between underage members and adult members, by the way? Obviously you guys make the rules, but Add_Water had an idea and I think it is a good one. Feel free to disagree all you want, but there is no need to be so high and mighty about it. Come off yourself.

Well, we are discussing the possibility now aren't we?. Some posters brought up a valid reason, namely that it's impossible to verify age at internet. Personally I think that an 18+ section would mostly have a magic attraction to underage members. It's goal and purpose would eventually be undermined I think. Assuming that we are not necessarily referring to pornography, I think we already cover several areas that generally mostly concern adults such as the political topics. There is even a thread were members can freely discuss the recreational use of drugs. Whether it's opportune for minors to witness this is another matter but then we come out again with the limitations on age verification.

As for the staff being ban-happy ... for some we are too lenient, for others we will be too harsh. We have to go by the largest common denominator and that way we are bound to make at least someone displeased with how we apply forum policy. I also read how members here thought of mods in other forums to be anonymous tyrants who don't interact at all with their members. I think we make an effort here to keep the delicate balance between keeping things pleasant and avoiding chaos at the same time. But there is always room for improvement of course and we certainly do have our flaws.

Having a restricted area brings up all sorts of issues in regards to not only to age verification of members, but also with advertising such as the Child's Play banner up the top. Although not allowing search engines to "see" these pages often makes it ok, its not worth it simply to have an area for what exactly?

I understand your reasoning for wanting a restricted section, but apart from the showing of nudity (partial or full), what other topics would be discussed? Is it not possible that these could be discussed in public viewing? If nudity is about the only thing that it would be good for, then its probably not worth the effort to create a whole new forum when there is plenty of that on other websites.

I'd be more for a VIP forum, where select members (first chosen by staff, then by other VIPs) get a private area. This form has worked quite successfully at other websites, and serves as a reward to good members. Members also often benefit from larger upload limits, or flood control bypass, etc.

Add_Water, mate, do what assninja and Claydon said. It shouldn't be too hard to find boobs somewhere else on the internet, should it?
There are only a few 18+ threads already, and outside of the stoners thread they have been incident free.

I agree with a VIP section too. It may even improve some peoples behaviour if they thought they could access an area for "being good". I for one dont really want to see boobs/flesh/other on display here, its supposed to be about RDR apart from one or two sections. A few times I have laughed at posts by some members then been shocked to find out they are still of school age. My general feeling when posting is that members are adults and unless you check, ( and sometimes ages are hidden ) you have no way of knowing, therefor I have to watch what I say sometimes just in case they are teens and get offended by something that an adult would deem OK.

Ha seems this idea is favoured.

I like the idea since you pretty much have to behave in order to access it.
I think this idea should be up for discussion.

I don't think either a good idea, the +18 for the above reasons and the VIP for the fact that it would have people crying 'elitism' so fast it would make our heads spin. These forums are here for a reason, to provide help and good conversations to those who love RDR. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
